Total War
WW2 was a total war. 70 nations took part in this war, and this war had soldiers traveling to 4 different continents. Total War was good for the United states, it was good because.....
- It brought people more jobs, rather than staying in a depression
- Brought married women into the work force
Fourteen Points
- The Fourteen Points were issued by Woodrow Wilson
The picture to the left is of the speech that was given when the 14 points were presented.
The Fourteen Points were:
- No more secret agreements.
- Free Nacigation of all seas.
- End to all exonomic barriers between countries.
- For countries to reduce weapon numbers.
- All decisions regarding the colonies should be impartial.
- The German Army was to be removed from Russia. (Russia should develop their own political set-up.)
- Belgium should be independant (Like they were before the war.)
- France should be fully liberated and allowed to revocer Alsace-Lorraine.
- All Italians are to be allowed to live in Italy. Borders are to "along clearly recognisable lines of nationality."
- Self-Determination should be allowed for all those living in Austria-Hungary.
- Self-Determination and guarentees of independence should be allowed for the Balkan states.
- The Turkish people should be governed by the Turkish government. (Non-Turks in the old Turkish Empire should govern themselves.)
- An independent Poland should be created which should have access to the seas.
- A league of nations should be set up to guarentee the political and territorial independence of all the states.

- The "Big four" included Woodrow Wilson, David Lloyd George, Georges Clemenceau, and Vittorio Orlando
- These men were the leaders of the major Allied countries
- They were the main four people deciding the fate of the Central Powers

- Woodrow was president of America when the Treaty of Versailles was signed
- He was America's 28th president
- He believed that Germany should be punished after WWII
- In January of 1918, Woodrow issued "Fourteen Points" as a basis for peace
- He also had an idea for "The League of Nations" to maintain peace
- Wilson sells out his 14 points to get the League of Nations
- In 1919 Woodrow went all across America
- September 3,1919 he goes on an 8,000 mile tour
- He gives 35 speeches in 22 days
- On October 2, 1919 In Pueblo,Col, Woodrow Wilson has a stroke and dies
America is not anything if it consists of each of us. It is something only if it consists of all of us.

David Lloyd George
- David Lloyd George was the major British politician at the Treaty of Versailles
- Lloyd George was a member of the Liberal party
- He was a very good and persuasive speaker
- In 1908 he came up with the "People's budget" which put a supertax onm the rich to help out the poor
- Lloyd George was Britain’s senior representative at the Versailles settlement.
- Lloyd George resigned as Prime Minister in October 1922
- He became the leader of the Liberal party in 1926
- Lloyd George died in 1945

- Georges Clemenceau was the senior French representative at the Versailles Settlement
- Clemenceau's nickname was "The Tiger"
- In 1906, He was Minister of Home Affairs and French Prime Minister
- Georges Clemenceau’s government lasted for two and three-quarter years
- This is the second longest in the history of the third republic
- In 1917, Clemenceau was appointed French Prime Minister again
- He led the French delegation at the peace talks held at the Versailles Palace
- Clemenceau uses League of Nations against Wilson
- In 1920 Clemenceau retired at age 79
- Clemenceau died in 1929

Vittorio Orlando
- Vittorio Orlando was Italy's Prime Minister at the end of WWI
- Orlando thought that at Versaillies, Italy woud be treated as an equal
- He was wrong
- Orlando’s failure at Versailles ended his political career
- He resigned and withdrew from politics when Mussolini came into power in 1922
- Orlando died in 1952

Reparations
- There were many Reparations that resulted from the Treaty of Versailles
- Germany had to pay for the damage caused by the war
- Austria had to pay Reparations, but went bankrupt before they could
- Hungary had to pay Reparations, but the amount was never set for them to pay
- Bulgaria had to pay £90 million in Reparations

Self-Determination
- Self-determination is the principle in international law that nations have the right to freely choose their sovereignty and international political status with no external compulsion or external interference
- Self-determination is also described as the free choice of one's own acts without external compulsion.
- The notion of self-determination of people to become or remain their own nation
- This became a value in the war and Treaty of Versailles
- It established the League of Nations
- The League of Nations existed under ideas that gave nations great value in global world
- It created many small nation-states that were weak and vulnerable to be conquested later
- Self-determination was always applied if it weakened Germany and its former allies
- But it was never used if it would have benefited them

- This stated that Germany was responsible for starting the war, so they were responsible for all the damage done
